Climate Action Funding: Best Practice
54% of respondents to the Scottish Third Sector Tracker currently anticipate that climate change will have no impact, or only a small impact, on their organisation.
Unfortunately, this is a misconception.
With the climate crisis bound to have an impact in communities across Scotland, unders are increasingly making climate action a core priority, expecting applicants to demonstrate how they are preparing for and responding to these challenges.
In collaboration with Midlothian Financial Inclusion Network and Midlothian Community Action we have put together a few resources to help you navigate climate funding and best practices.
green flags For Funders: Best Practice for climate funding
In collaboration with the Midlothian Financial Inclusion Network we have created a short booklet, providing essential support for organisations new to focusing on climate issues. It outlines the real impacts of the climate emergency and offers practical guidance on how to access funding to prepare for them.

Funding Workshop: September 2024
In September 2024 we teamed up with our colleagues at the Midlothian Community Action (MCA) to host a workshop all about funding. You can see the full recording and a re-cap below, as well as download the slides.
A few key things to keep in mind!
To ensure your funding application is as good as it can be, there’s a few key things you should remember:
- Keep it simple! Write for an “intelligent outsider” who doesn’t know much or anything about your organisation or context
- Describe all key issues in your application, not in attached documents
- Avoid jargon and acronyms as much as possible
There can be a wide variety of reasons why funding applications are rejected, but there are a few that come up over and over again. These include:
- Not clearly linking the activities proposed with the impact expected
- Not answering questions directly asked in the application
- Not providing proof for statements such as “we have a long history…”
What funding is available for Midlothian groups?
Besides our very own Seedcorn Grants, which open every year, we keep a list of available funding opportunities that is updated every month. We also share the latest opportunities through our monthly newsletter.
For SCVO members, you can access their Funding – SCVO page that allows you to search for funding opportunities specific to the project you are planning. You can also visit MCA’s Funding page to find out more about third sector funding in Midlothian.
